About veneer

WHAT IS VENEER

Timber veneer is a decorative building material comprising thin slices of timber glued onto wooden board, particle board or fibreboard. It has been favoured by builders and designers since ancient times as the finest and most efficient use of the valuable timbers.

TYPES OF VENEER

Veneer can be produced in its purest form, a thinly sliced log, or other processes can be used to expand the final outcome. Woods can be dyed to produce more extensive colours or produced from a mix of logs rather than a single log.

DIFFERENT CUTS

Several cut methods are used to create various wood grain patterns. The most commonly produced grains are: Crown, Quarter, and Rotary. However, other cuts exist and highlight specific features such as Birdseye, Quiltes, Pommele or Burl/Burr.

SUSTAINABILITY

Timber veneer is renewable, reusable, recyclable, and completely biodegradable. Veneering is a highly efficient use of wood and environmentally friendly.

A Manual for Decorative Wood Veneering Technology available for free download

The Association identified that the industry would greatly benefit from the development of a technical manual specifying the best veneering and finishing procedures to ensure the production of top quality veneered products.

The manual covers all aspects of the veneering process, including the requirements for decorative veneers, substrate materials, glues and finishes, manufacturing procedures, storage and handling, typical problems related to veneered products and their prevention, and quality control in the production of decorative veneered products.
