Quality Assurance

The Association has a Quality Assurance Recommendation Program to check the quality of the glue bond (AFRDI 145). The testing regime was developed by the Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute (Furntech) for use at the production site. Participating TVAA members have received training in the testing techniques from Furntech.

The Glue Bond Test (AFRDI 145) Members are:

PRODUCT STANDARDS

Veneered board is to be manufactured in accordance with the following standards:

Substrate:

  • AS/NZS 1859 Reconstituted wood based panels, Part l – Particleboard, and Part 2 – Medium Density Fibreboard.
  • AS2270 Plywood and blockboard for interior use and AS2271: Plywood and blockboard for exterior use.

Veneer Bond:

  • AS/NZS 1859.3 provides performance requirements and specifications in the manufacture and application of decorative overlaid wood panels.
  • Procedures have been developed for measuring the strength of the bond between the wood veneer and the substrate, and minimum standards set which should be met by wood veneered panels. These are covered by the Standard AS/NZS 1859.3 and AS/NZS 4266.32 (Veneer Bond Strength) and AS/NZS 4266.33 (Veneer Bond Durability).

GLUING STANDARDS

These address the manner by which veneer is glued to the substrate.

AS/NZS 1859.3

Reconstituted wood-based panels – Specifications – Decorative overlaid wood panels

Provides performance requirements and specifications for the manufacture and application of decorative overlaid wood panels. It specifies dimensional tolerances and physical and mechanical properties for four types of decorative overlay applied to wood panel substrate, i.e., low pressure melamine (LPM), PVC film, paper foils, and wood veneers. Appendices provide information on handling and storage of decorative wood panels and selection and application of screw fasteners.

AFRDI STANDARD 145

The veneer industry test standard. Deals with veneer bond strength and durability.

SUBSTRATE STANDARDS

These address the substrate to which the veneer is glued.

AS2270

Plywood and blockboard for interior use

Provides minimum performance requirements and specifications for appearance and non-appearance grades of plywood and blockboard acceptable for use in fully protected interior applications in Australia and New Zealand. Describes the basic interior plywood and blockboard product. Particular end uses may require additional processing, immunization or surface finishing.

Available from SAI Global.

AS2271

Plywood and blockboard for exterior use

Specifies the requirements for the manufacture, grading, finishing and branding of an appearance grade of non-structural plywood and non-structural blockboard bonded with adhesives of suitable durability for use in applications where the product is exposed to the weather or wet or damp conditions.

Available from SAI Global.

AS/NZS 1859.1

Reconstituted wood-based panels – Specifications – Particleboard

Specifies product requirements for the purposes of quality control in manufacture and performance requirements for three classes of particleboards, i.e., standard (STD), moisture resistant (MR) and high performance (HP) particleboards.

Available from SAI Global.

AS/NZS 1859.2

Reconstituted wood-based panels – Specifications – Dry-processed fibreboard

Specifies product requirements for the purposes of quality control in manufacture and performance requirements for dry-processed fibreboards, including ultra-low-density, low-density, medium-density and high-density fibreboards.

Available from SAI Global.
